Landslide warnings for eight districts as Southwest Monsoon gathers momentum

Showery and windy conditions are expected to continue in the western and southern sea areas and in the southwest quarter of the island due to active Southwest Monsoon which had already caused havoc with four people dead and around 3000 families affected., the Department of Meteorology said yesterday.  

Heavy rainfall above 100 mm was forecast at some places in Sabaragamuwa province and in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts. Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, and North-Western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.   


Very strong winds about 60 kmph are expected at times along the western slopes of the Central hills while strong winds about 50 kmph can be expected at times in the Northern, North-central, Western, North-western and Southern provinces.  


Meanwhile the National Building Research Bureau (NBRO) issued landslide warnings for eight districts including Galle, Hambantota, Kandy, Kegalle, Matale, Matara, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura.
