Local authorities, Divisional Secretariat tainted with corruption in public duties

The local authorities and the divisional secretariats are among the state institutions rampant with various forms of corruption and malpractices in the delivery of their services to the public , a top parliamentary committee finds .  


The Parliamentary Sectoral Oversight Committee on Accountable Governance has identified it and recommended the appointment of a special officer covering each divisional secretariat to curb corruption and malpractices.  

Committee Chairman Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna ( SLPP) MP Jagath Kumara told Daily Mirror corruption and malpractices manifest in various forms .  
He said corruption takes place in instances such as granting approval for housing plans and land development projects .  


“We have dealt with all in general terms and made recommendations to rectify them. We asked for publication of proper criterion for people to know when submitting plans for approval ,” he said .
