The low-pressure area still persistent in the vicinity of Sri Lanka had brought about a flood threat, Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said yesterday.
DMC Spokesman Pradeep Kodippili said spill gates of several reservoirs including Kala Wewa and Rajangane in Anuradhapura district and Laxapana, Victoria reservoirs have been opened as of last afternoon. Spill gates of Deduru Oya had also been opened.
DMC rescue teams and security forces have been kept on alert to face any emergency situation according to Mr. Kodippili. Mini floods were reported in Hiniduma in the Galle District with the overflowing of Gin Ganga. One person has been washed away by the waters in Passara.
Landslide warnings were issued in Passara in Badulla District and Aranayaka in Kegalle District.
Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology forecast heavy showers above 100 mm at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and North-central Provinces in the coming days. Many of these provinces received rainfall of more than 100 mm while the highest rainfall, of 240 mm, was recorded from Wewalthalawa in Kegalle District.
