Magistrate asks CID why PNB officers were detained under the PTA

  • They had filed a further “B” report in Court to send the suspects from  detention to remand without disclosing the acts committed by the  suspects

Two Police Narcotic Bureau officers arrested and detained with the CID on charges of drug trafficking and selling heroin and a narcotic locally called ‘ICE’ seized during raids to traffickers were sent to remand from detention by Colombo Chief Magistrate yesterday.

The Counsel for the suspects submitted that subsequent to their arrest, the CID had filed several “B” reports in court to detain the suspects with the CID but none of those reports had disclosed the offences committed by the suspects which comes under the Prevention of Terrorist Act and yesterday they had filed a further “B” report in Court to send the suspects from detention to remand without disclosing the acts committed by the suspects.
They said this is an infringement of the suspect’s rights and to order CID to reveal the alleged offences committed by the suspects under the PTA.

The Magistrate ordered the CID to show cause why the suspects were detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and to disclose to court the alleged offences committed by the suspects under it.

The Council also moved court to order the Prison Superintendent to remand the suspects in safe custody as the suspects were Police officers.
The two suspects were remanded till July12.
