Mano asks Samantha Power to ensure moratorium on PTA

Visiting USAID administrator Samantha Power who met a group of opposition party leaders on Sunday, is reported to have said that her country will support Sri Lanka on economic crisis, democratic reforms and accountability.

 The party leaders were Sajith Premadasa, Mano Ganesan, Rauf Hakeem, M. A. Sumanthiran, Dayasiri Jayasekara, Rishad Bathiudeen, and Harini Amarasuriya. 


The discussion centred on the current political and economical crisis in Sri Lanka and the opposition’s  opinion on ways and means to overcome it. 


During the meeting, Mr. Premadasa requested her to support Sri Lanka and to urge the government to adhere to human rights obligations.


Mr. Ganesan asked her to ensure US support for a moratorium on the implementation of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) till it is repealed to be replaced by the enactment of a new counter terrorism law.
Mr. Sumanthiran briefed her on steps initiated by his party along with others to create awareness on the need to scrap the PTA.
