The matron of a children’s home in Divulapitiya who had been arrested by police on suspicion of rubbing chillie powder on the genitals of a nine-year-old boy and inflicting him cruelties was produced before Minuwangoda Magistrate Kesara C.A. Samaradivakara and released on personal bail of Rs.200,000.
The suspect S. Niluka Neil Kumari was a resident of Henpitagedara in Marandagahamula and a mother of a child. Police informed court that nine children who are under a court order and 14 others on the request of their parents were under the care of the Children’s Home run by a couple in Nawala.
Police told the court that a nine-year-old child under the care of the orphanage had passed urine on bed while asleep and that the matron had taken him to the bathroom and smeared chillie power on the
genital organ. The magistrate who severely warned the suspect woman not to allow the recurrence of similar misdeeds held that she would be released on bail, on the submissions of her lawyer. Attorney-at-Law Sarala Karunaratne appeared for the suspect.
