Medical faculty teachers up in arms against closure of universities, schools

  • We strongly believe that higher education and school education should continue uninterrupted

The Federation of Faculty of Medical Teachers Association of Sri Lanka (FFMTA) which stressed that higher education should be continued despite the present challenging situation came up with several demands to facilitate education.

“We FFMTA, representative of medical faculties of all 11 state universities of Sri Lanka are concerned about the recent closure of the Peradeniya University and Colombo schools as response to the country’s current situation. We acknowledge the current logistical challenges. We strongly believe that higher education and school education should continue uninterrupted. We urge the government to address logical challenges, hampering education such as shortages of fuel, gas and transportation issues as a priority.

As adopting measures, we propose setting up of a shuttle bus service to transport students and staff, considering meetings online, conducting online lectures whenever possible, ensuring facilities for practical classes conducted in person.

While taking these measures, we believe that the root cause for the crisis can only be addressed by a political solution as determined by the people.

FFMTA observes that no proper action has been taken to alleviate/minimize people’s burden but rather temporary measures such as discontinuing education which will worsen the situation.

The statement was signed by Presidents of all branches of FFMTA and its convenor Professor Sudarshan Karunatilleka.
