The depression over South-West Bay of Bengal located East of Trincomalee coast, is very likely to intensify into a deep depression and expected to move North-Westwards along and off the East coast of Sri Lanka towards North Tamil Nadu coast during the next 48 hours, the Department of Meteorology said yesterday.

“Under the influence of the system, deep and shallow sea areas off the Northern, North-Eastern and Eastern coasts will be very rough with intermittent showers or thundershowers and gusty winds up to 60-70 kmph during the next few days,” the Department said.

Wind speed is expected to increase up to 50-60 kmph at times over the sea area extending from Kankesanturai to Mannar.

Naval and fishing communities were warned not to venture to the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Batticaloa via Kankesanturai and Trincomalee. Those who are out at the aforementioned sea regions were advised to return to coasts or move to safer areas immediately.
