More than 12,000 people affected by inclement weather



  • More than 70mm of rainfall is expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces, as well as Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts

More than 12,000 people from 2,632 families have been affected due to floods following heavy rains experienced in the past few days, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said.  

As per their report, 12,172 people in the Sabaragamuwa, Central and Western Provinces have been affected.  


So far, no deaths, injuries, or missing people have been reported.  


The DMC said 104 people from 28 families were affected in the Sabaragamuwa province; 50 people from 12 families were affected in the Central Province; and 591 people from 156 families were affected in the Western Province district, the DMC said.  


They said 39 houses were partially damaged due to heavy rain and high winds.   175 people from 42 families were sent to safe locations.  
Meanwhile, the Hydrology and Disaster Management centre said minor flood situations were reported in Nilwala Ganga, Gin Ganga, Kida Ganga, Kalu Ganga and Kelani Ganga.   
However, the Meteorological Department predicts more than 70mm of rainfall in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces, as well as Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts.  


Strong winds of about 40 kmph could be expected on the western slope of the central hills, in the Northern, North-Central, and North-Western provinces, as well as the districts of Trincomalee and Hambantota.
