More than 5000 people in North affected by floods

More than 5000 people in the north had been affected by the prevailing inclement weather. 

Kilinochchi Disaster Management Centre reported last morning that low lying areas had gone under water due to the opening of spill gates of the Iranamadu reservoir.   


In Mullaitivu, Thannimurippu reservoir, the largest in the district, and all other tanks and reservoirs were overflowing and it created a flood threat in several areas. The largest number of displaced in the North were reported from the Mullaitivu district.  More than 2350 people in Kilinocchchi and 2700 people in Mullaitivu district had been displaced by floods.   


Police and the Army has taken step to help the people in the affected areas. A senior military official said relief teams were deployed to provide urgent relief to the people. He pointed out that that heavy rainfall persisted, increasing the number of  people affected by the disastrous situation.
