A woman who inflicted grievous injuries on her nine-year-old daughter by causing her serious burns was arrested by Pallewela Police yesterday.

The girl who had been subject to cruelty was admitted to Watupitiwala Base Hospital. Pallewela Police said they arrested the suspect woman during investigations of a complaint received by the Child Protection Authority. The victim was a resident of Kaleliya in Pallewela Police area. Police said the girl’s mother had told another individual that the woman in a neighbouring house was selling illegal intoxicants and that the latter had come to know it from the girl. During an altercation between the two parties over the incident the girl’s mother was found fault causing burn injuries on her daughter. A spokesman for the hospital said that the girl was in a critical condition. The suspect was to be produced before the Attanagalla Magistrate last morning. Pallewela Police are conducting further investigations.
