Mother who sold 7 day old baby for Rs. 50,000 arrested

A young mother who sold her seven day old infant child for Rs. 50,000 and, the husband of a nurse in a government hospital who facilitated the deal were taken into custody by Anuradhapura Police on Sunday evening (25). 

Police said several others including a 40 year old man who had been living with the woman and allegedly the child’s father, a nurse in a government hospital, an attendant of the hospital, two school teachers involved in the incident would be arrested. 


The main suspect, a 21 year old woman was a resident of Kebitigollewa who had been living together with a 40 year old man in a hut on the banks of the Malwathuoya river. 


Investigations revealed that the male child, is his and sold to a couple in Wahalkada area at his instigation due to economic constraints. 


The suspect woman stated that she had a one and half year old son. 
Anuradhapura Police who initiated investigations on a tip off from the public, arrested the child’s mother and another involved. 


Police said other suspects including the child’s father wanted in connection with the incident would be arrested soon. 


Woman and Children’s Bureau of the Anuradhapura Police is conducting further investigations on the instructions of HQI Anuradhapura CI Lakmal Wijeratne.
