NMRA hints at potential medicine price reductions

The National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) has indicated the possibility of reducing drug prices, pending the resolution of legal hurdles.

NMRA Chairman stated that a court case filed by a pharmaceutical importing company had temporarily blocked efforts to lower prices.   “However, once the prohibition order is lifted, measures will be implemented to regulate prices effectively and ensure affordable medicines for the public,” he stated.

The chairman further highlighted that the NMRA has overcome its recent challenges and is now operating in a stable environment.

He expressed optimism that the authority could soon achieve recognition from the World Health Organisation (WHO).

“In addition, several initiatives aimed at streamlining operations have been introduced over the past year. These include the implementation of an e-system for drug registration, status checks, and correspondence, along with other significant projects aimed at enhancing the efficiency of the regulatory process,” he added.
