A two-kilometre new rail track from the Anuradhapura main Railway Station to the Mihintale junction will be constructed for direct train operations between Anuradhapura and Mihintale.
The current rail line to Mihintale branches off from the main northern line at the Mihintale junction. The Minister said once the new two-kilometre line is constructed, trains can be operated directly from Anuradhapura to Mihintale without taking the northern line for turning at the current Mihintale junction.

“Rails removed for the modernization of the Anuradhapura-Omanthai stretch will be reused in the new project. There are such rails that can be used at least for another ten years,” he said.
He said rail services would be developed to establish Mihintale as a logistics hub.

“Work on the new track will begin on August 12,” he said.
