Even though there was no change in the stance of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) on the recent fuel price hike, SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam said yesterday they would not allow the opposition to fish in troubled waters by bringing in a no-confidence motion against Energy Minister Udaya Gammanpila.
He told a news conference that the SLPP as the main constituent party of the government had a responsibility to protect the government which was formed with the support of 6.9 million people. Mr. Kariyawasam said he expressed the stance of the party on the subject minister’s failure to take action to prevent a fuel price hike and added that the SLPP as a party continued to hold that stance with regard to the fuel price hike.
“We as a party, have a right to express our stance. I expressed the stance of the party on behalf of the people not for the opposition to take undue advantage. We are not ready to get caught in the trap of the opposition. We will not allow the opposition to fish in troubled waters,” he said.
Responding to a question he said, they would take a decision with regard to the no-confidence motion against Minister Gammanpila after a discussion with SLPP leaders and other constituent parties of the government.
