Health authorities have predicted that another wave, which would be triggered by the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus, may be visible in the country in future. President of the Sri Lanka Family Physicians Association, Dr. Malkanthi Galhena told a media briefing yesterday that it was of utmost importance that people brace themselves to face such a wave and to avert it.

“As far as the trends in the world are concerned, the Omicron is likely to pose a monumental threat to a number of countries. Thus, the threat is not exceptional for Sri Lanka,” she underscored.

“However, it has been scientifically proven that a booster dose provides sufficient protection against Omicron variant,” she stated.

Hence, Dr Galhena urged those eligible individuals who had not yet received their third shot, to get themselves boosted as early as possible.

“Besides, it is also imperative to stringently follow health rules to keep coronavirus at bay,” she added.
Sri Lanka has so far reported seven patients of Omicron variant.
