One dead, several affected due to floods in Galle District



  • Heavy showers exceeding 100 mm expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces during the coming days, warns Met Dept.

One person died and 300 families were affected as minor floods were reported from low line areas in the Galle District, Disaster Management Centre officials in the District said yesterday.   


Heavy rains which had exceeded 150mm were recorded from the area yesterday.   


Heavy showers exceeding 100 mm are expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern provinces during the coming days, the Department of Meteorology warned yesterday.  


Showers or thundershowers are experienced in a few places in the Uva Province and in Ampara District in the evenings or at night.  


Wind speed can increase up to 60 kmph at times in the sea areas of Northern, North-Central, North-Western and Southern Provinces.  


Many areas in the island experienced heavy rainfalls exceeding 100mm with Madurawala in the Kalutara District receiving the highest rainfall of 248mm, Galkaduwa 172mm, Meegahatenna 155.5mm, Badureliya 214mm and Yakkalamulla 162mm.
