An armed gang that entered a home garden at Thenagama in the Tangalle police area on Thursday night had assaulted to death one individual and caused serious injuries to his younger brother. The two men had been dragged along the ground to a nearby building site and assaulted with clubs.

The deceased Chaturanga Dilshan (34) was an officer of the Police Traffic unit in the Kasagala entrance of the Southern Express Way and father of a child. He had died at the scene. His brother who received serious injuries in the assault was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.

Investigations revealed that Dilshan was preparing to leave home to report for duty when a gang of about ten individuals entered the house and assaulted him and his brother with clubs.

Police said the main suspect involved in the incident had been identified and that an animosity between the two parties had resulted in the murder.

Tangalle police are conducting further investigations to arrest the suspects.
