Opposition divided on elections?

Whilst the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) said they expect General Elections by March next year, other opposition groups seemed to be holding a different stance when it comes to polls.

SJB’s official spokesman MP S. M. Marikkar said a General Election will be held in March next year. “Mark my words as there will be a General Election in March next year,” he told a press conference.”

“President Ranil Wickremesinghe will never hold an early Presidential Election. He is trying to hoodwink the people and the SLPP. SLPP have not read the President correctly,” he said.

Commenting on elections, MP Dullas Alahapperuma said a group of MPs led by him are lobbying for the Provincial Council election. “We are trying our best to have the provincial council elections held first. The government postponed it in an undemocratic way. Why should we request for other elections from a dictatorship. Presidential elections are scheduled to be held in October 2024. Let’s wait and see till then,” Mr. Alahapperuma told Daily Mirror.   Earlier Minister Harin Fernando and UNP Deputy Leader hinted of a Presidential Election either early or mid next year.
