Deep divisions threaten consensus

The Opposition parties are reportedly divided on the proposed Domestic Debt Restructuring programme, with some members undecided and others expected to vote in favour in Parliament, Daily Mirror learns.   

According to reliable sources, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Parliamentary Group meeting was contentious, as some MPs argued against opposing it while others believed the party should not risk being blamed for any potential economic crisis, and therefore, should abstain from voting in favour.  SJB MP Vadivel Suresh stated that he would make his final decision after examining the resolution. He expressed his willingness to support the Domestic Debt Restructuring programme as long as it does not impact the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF), or pensions, or adversely affect the plantation community.   

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP M. A. Sumanthiran informed Daily Mirror that his party would make a final decision after reviewing the resolution presented in Parliament. However, he emphasized their opposition to any measures affecting the EPF and Employees’ Trust Fund (ETF).   

Opposition MP Kumara Welgama stated that he would make his decision later. He added that he sees no alternative to the stance taken by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, believing him to be the only leader capable of resolving the economic crisis.   

Additionally, the group led by MP Dullas Alahaperuma, Uttara Lanka Sahabaga led by MP Wimal Weerawansa, and Jathika Jana Balawegaya (JJB) are also expected to vote against the resolution.
