  • Admission of Covid patients exceed capacity
  • Treatment centres facing a shortage of beds

Sri Lanka Public Health Inspectors’ Association has warned that the rate of COVID-19 was increasing in alarming proportions and that the country was heading for a disastrous situation not less than that of India and Indonesia.

President of the PHIs’ Association Upul Rohana told the media yesterday that the government and the public were similarly responsible for this situation and that it could be brought under control only with the concerted effort of the two parties. “At present, the admission of COVID-19 patients has exceeded the capacity of most of the hospitals while the treatment centres were facing a shortage of beds and the patients have been left without the basic facilities. This has compelled the health authorities to keep patients in their homes and provide treatment. We are alarmed that the situation would soon be beyond control of the health sector.

The situation in Colombo, Kalutara and Gampaha districts is already not within the capacity of the PHIs. The rapid death toll of the pandemic experienced at present is a clear indication that the danger would further aggravated in the days to come” The President of the PHIs Associations said. He stressed the need to implement strict travel restrictions and health guidelines as they had advised earlier to bring this disastrous situation under control and requested the government and the health authorities to take well advised decisions in this regard without putting the blame on the public alone.
