PHU support to no confidence motion conditional: Udaya Gammanpila

  • SJB has not agreed to an interim government. What will happen next?

 By Kelum Bandara

Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) leader MP Udaya Gammanpila said he would support the no confidence motion against the government only if the main Opposition Samagi Jana Balwegaya (SGB), as the mover of it, proved 113 signatures to get it passed in Parliament and agreed to support the interim government to be formed next.

Addressing a press conference at his party headquarters, he said, “The SJB which enjoys 46 seats in Parliament is planning for a no confidence motion against the government. For the motion to be passed in Parliament unseating the government, the support of 87 more MPs is needed.

The SJB has not initiated any discussion with other parties for it. Currently, the government has 118 MPs. But, the government’s popularity has dropped to the lowest ebb.

In case, the government defeats the motion to be moved by the Opposition, it will be a morale booster for it. We should not leave room for the government to do it.

In the event of the no confidence motion getting passed in Parliament, the government stands dissolved. But, the SJB has not agreed to an interim government.

What will happen next? There is no government. It will be an anarchic situation in the country,”
