Parakrama Samudra reservoir in Polonnaruwa had swelled and was rising fast by last morning due to the torrential rain experienced in the area.

Engineers in Charge of the reservoir said four out of ten spill gates were opened last morning to release excess water at a speed of 500 sq.ft per second to the Mahaweli river through Ambanganga.

Director of Irrigation Polonnaruwa Zone L.M.W. Ratnasiri said the capacity of the reservoir stood at 110,000 acre feet by last morning. He said more spill gates would be opened if the prevailing inclement weather persisted.
