Parliamentary electoral system amendment should be done in a genuine manner by drawing up a proper time span after which it comes into effect, an opposition MP said yesterday.
Leader of Nidahas Janatha Sabhawa Dullas Alahapperuma came up with his view regarding reports which said Minister of Justice Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe is about to submit a paper to the cabinet seeking the amendment of the parliamentary electoral system.
“It is obvious that the public wants the electoral systems amended. However, such a move should not result in the postponement of any election. Therefore, the amendment should be implemented within a proper space of time when the amendment comes to be effective,” he said.
“However, we have to look at the situation in a suspicious manner at the moment. Parliament had already approved the electoral systems for provincial councils and local bodies. The government had delayed the provincial council elections by failing to appoint a delimitation committee. We will be compelled to look at the present situation in a suspicious manner given that scenario,” he added.
Mr. Alahapperuma said that all opposition parties should come together if the government tries to erase the electoral map of the country.
