• For personal vehicles and three-wheelers operating on part-time basis

Plans were afoot to introduce a mechanism where motorists could obtain fuel according to the last digit of their number plates, Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said yesterday. 

He told a news conference that this mechanism would be introduced for personal vehicles and three-wheelers operating on a part-time basis.

The Minister said these vehicles would be able to obtain fuel only two days a week under this new mechanism and added that they expected to remove two-third of the vehicles lined up in fuel queues daily.
He said this new system was still in the making.

“We have not finalsed it as yet. It could operate, for example, vehicles with number plates ending with digit 0,1 or 2 could be allocated Monday and Thursday. Number plates ending with digit 3,4 or 5 could allocate the dates Tuesday and Friday.
