The DNA samples obtained from the mother and brother of the 30-year- old  murdered woman from Kuruwita whose headless corpse was found inside a bag at Dam Street, matched with the sample taken from the slain woman, the Government Analyst’s report confirmed yesterday.

Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said the police had initiated an investigation after the decapitated body was recovered on March 1.

Although, it was disclosed that the murdered woman was a 30-year-old resident of Kuruwita, the investigators needed to confirm the identity of the body biologically.  In order to confirm the identity, the  DNA samples of her mother and the brother were obtained and sent to the Government Analyst’s Department along with the body tissues of the slain woman.  DIG Rohana said the autopsy on the remains would be conducted since its identity had been confirmed now.

The woman had been staying with a Sub Inspector of Police who was attached to the Buttala Police Station, at a guest house in Hanwella where she was brutally murdered.  Investigations revealed that the suspect who had severed head of the woman separately,  had stuffed only the headless corpse into a suitcase, and had abandoned it at Dam Street in Colombo.
