The Bambalapitiya Police yesterday granted police bail to Hambantota Mayor Eraj Fernando who was arrested in connection with an alleged assault. 

He was released on police bail after surrendering to the Bambalapitiya Police last morning (19) in connection with the incident.

An official said that both parties were instructed to appear before the conciliation board as the matter was to be resolved in a conciliation board.

The Bambalapitiya Police launched an investigation against the Mayor after a private sector security officer had lodged a complaint that Eraj Fernando had stormed into a property at Kothalawala avenue in Bambalapitiya last week without giving any reason and had verbally abused and assaulted him and the other security officer who was with him. A security guard who was allegedly assaulted by the mayor was later admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.

The Police recorded several statements in connection with the incident.
