A three-day special operation was launched across the country yesterday to inspect worn-out tyres of vehicles, Police announced.
Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said about eight people were killed in the past 24 hours due to fatal road accidents.
He said faulty conditions of the vehicles are the root cause for the accidents.
DIG Rohana said the Divisional SPs, SSPs and OICs have been told to conduct operations to detect vehicles that are running with worn-out tyres. “If a person found to have committed a traffic offence has been using worn-out tyres, he could be fined up to Rs. 3,500 and if anyone was found injured by such a vehicle, there is a possibility of imposing a fine of Rs. 25,000 in addition to the ordinary penalty imposed for causing injury,” he said.
