Political parties should not get involved in people’s protests: Ruwan

By Yohan Perera

No political party should get involved in protests organised by people themselves, as they should be allowed to express themselves freely, UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene said yesterday.

“The youth who have organised the protests should be allowed to express themselves, and therefore parties should not get involved. What the politicians should do is to come up with solutions to the problems. Let the people decide as to who had come up with the best solutions,” Mr. Wijewardene said.

“People are provoked as they have been deprived of basic needs such as power. The nation is subjected to a ten-hour power cut, and has been increased to thirteen hours from yesterday. Common masses have begun showing their frustration lately. This is why we have seen incidents lately,” he added.

“I appeal to the political parties not to sabotage people’s campaigns. I ask those who plan to take to the streets to be cautious” he also said.
