In a stunning incident on Monday (14) at a leading school in the Narammala area, the contest for the head prefectship in the school had allegedly led one of the contestants, a grade ten student, to mix poison into the bottles of drinking water of five others. When the children who drank poisoned water developed vomiting, she had drunk a little of it too and taken ill.
Investigations revealed that she had stayed back in the classroom without attending the morning assembly and poisoned the bottles of drinking water of others.
The six schoolgirls who had taken ill were admitted to Narammala Divisional Hospital. The schoolgirl involved in the incident had been identified from the CCTV recordings in school.
Police said the weedicide mixed with the drinking water had been identified as Carpentra which is not a strong chemical and that the six schoolgirls under treatment were out of danger.
OIC Narammala Police CI Dilruk Perera is conducting further investigations.
