President Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday expressed his shock on the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump on Saturday and said he was relieved to learn that he is safe. “The President stated that Sri Lankans have been at the receiving end of such violence in politics, and urged all to adhere to the laws protecting Democracy,” President’s media unit said.
Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa said violence in politics is an assault on democracy itself it must be condemned in the strongest terms.
“As someone who has felt the turmoil of such a situation, my thoughts and prayers are with President Trump and his family. Wishing him a swift and full recovery,”Premadasa said in his X message.
Meanwhile Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka who also condemned the shooting said violence and hatred should have no place in society.
“I am deeply concerned about the attack on Former US President Trump. Violence and hatred should have no place in society. I wish him a speedy recovery,” Fonseka said in his X message.
The Former US President was rushed off stage with blood on his ear and face after he was shot at during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
