In the midst of political violence, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has initiated efforts for the appointment of a new prime minister, Daily Mirror learns.

The president is reported to have held talks with various representatives including members of Maha Sanga on Monday night and yesterday morning to discuss the situation on the appointment of the next prime minister for an interim period.

A delegation of Buddhist monks led by Ven. Omalpe Sobitha Thera has asked for the appointment of former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya as the prime minister.

However, he is not a sitting MP at the moment and therefore has to be nominated to the House on the National List first. For that, one MP has to resign.

Mr. Jayasuriya has consented to take such a responsibility at this hour.

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), as the main opposition, has said it won’t be part of any interim government under the current president. Instead, it will agree to a common programme.
