President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, at the parliamentary group meeting of the government stressed the need to enact the Kotelawala National Defence University (KNDU) Bill to expand higher education and to save foreign exchange otherwise spent by students going overseas for studies, Daily Mirror learns.

The bill has sparked a debate in the country, with the opposition parties referring to it as a piece of legislation aimed at militarising and privatising higher education.
However, the president said at a meeting with the members of the Buddhist clergy that a lot of criticism on the content of the bill had emanated from various quarters due to ignorance.
At yesterday’s group meeting, the president asked for the enactment of the bill into law with amendments.

State Minister Arundika Fernando also spoke in support of the president’s remarks. He said the country loses a lot of foreign exchange due to students seeking foreign education after their Advanced Level examinations.
