Dr. Mohammad Ilyas, (78) who is a candidate of this year’s presidential election, passed away last night (22) at the Puttalam Hospital due to a sudden heart attack.  

Dr. Ilyas served as a Member of Parliament during the Chandrika Kumaratunga government.  

Dr. Ilyas had been hospitalized two days ago after falling ill unexpectedly. With his passing, the number of presidential candidates has been reduced to 38.
