The price of rice is expected to go up once again with the removal of controlled prices while the price of gas too may go up, UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene said yesterday. Speaking to the youth on zoom, Mr. Wijewardene said the government which promised prosperity was showing its real face by the decisions it was taking pertaining to the distribution of essential goods.
“Government boasted that it will control the prices of rice and imposed a price control mechanism. A drama was staged saying the rice mills will be raided. This was done but only a stock of 800,000 kgs of rice was recovered. Then a price control was imposed. However, prices of rice are slated to go up. A kilo of Keeri Samba is to be increased to Rs. 140 a kilo from the current price of Rs. 120. While, a kilo of ordinary Samba rice is to be increased to Rs. 120 from the current price of Rs 103,” Mr. Wijewardene said.
“The current price of gas is also expected to go up to the level which existed prior to 2015. It was our government which reduced the price of gas to Rs 1,400 from Rs 2,400. Price of flour is to be increased by Rs. 10 and the price of cement by Rs 50,” he added.
“In addition the cost of living committee has decided to increase the price of milk powder by Rs 200 and gas by Rs 550,” he also said.
