In the wake of the incident in which two Iranian inmates died after drinking sanitiser liquid, the use of sanitising liquids for inmates in prisons has been prohibited.

The Prisons Department said inmates will not be provided disinfectants liquid for hand washing but will provide soap instead.

Also, inmates are not allowed to receive disinfectants from visitors. However, it has been decided to use the sanitiser liquid only once a week to disinfect prison wards.

Last week, two Iranian inmates detained at the Colombo Remand Prison have died and eight others were hospitalized after they consumed alcohol-based sanitiser.
