An imminent clash in Chilaw town last morning between a pro-government demonstration and a group of anti-government protesters was averted by Police.
The protesters against the government hooted and threw stones at the demonstration but the Police brought the situation under control and prevented any possible incidents of violence.
A Police contingent of more than 100 personnel and the Army had been deployed to enhance security in the area.
More than 1000 protesters and pro-government demonstrators had gathered in Chilaw town and among them were several religious dignitaries protesting against the government.
A heavy traffic congestion was experienced in the town during the demonstration.
A Police contingent comprising Officers In Charge of all police stations in the Chilaw Police division had been deployed on the instructions of SP Ranjith Wijeyawardene and SSP Lalith Rohana Gamage.
