The Ministry of Fisheries together with Marine Environment Protection Authority had begun a probe on the killing of blue whales in Kalpitiya using explosives, MP Yadamini Gunawardene said yesterday.

Mr. Gunawardene said Minister  Douglas Devananda had informed him that his ministry together with Marine Environment Protection Authority had already begun an investigation into the killing of whales and dolphins in Kalpitiya illegally.

The investigations were prompted after Daily Mirror exposed the illegal killing of whales in the said area.

MP Gunawardene raised the issue in Parliament last week after Daily mirror exposed the situation on October 17, 2022. The report said using of explosives have had an adverse effect on coral reefs, while it could even result in sea erosion in the area.

The MP said he had written to Minister Devananda on the matter after raising the issue in the House and the minister had replied saying an investigation on the issue has already begun.
