Provincial council or any other election should not be the priority: UNP

  • Country is facing a host of other issues

Provincial council election or any other election should not be the priority at this moment as the country is facing a host of other issues, UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardana said yesterday.

Mr. Abeywardana told a press conference that voters should be fed before making them go to the polling booth at this point in time. “I heard that a mother had committed suicide together with her children as she could not feed her children. We might hear more of such similar news if the crisis which the nation is going through today is not resolved,” he said.

Also, the UNP chairman said the government should attract foreign investors while allowing local entrepreneurs to come up. “We had some reputed local entrepreneurs such as Amarasuriya who was one of the richest persons in the Galle District, while there are others such as Upali Wijewardene. Sri Lanka has lost entrepreneurs of such calibre,” he said.
