In the wake of torrential rains, the Irrigation Department has warned of a minor flood situation in low lying areas of the Nilwala River valley in Kotapola, Pitabeddara, Akuressa, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Thihagoda, Matara and Devinuwara D/S Divisions.  

 Residents in these areas and motorists travelling through these areas are requested to beware and take adequate precautions.  

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department said in an advisory that heavy showers above 100mm are expected at some places in the Southern Province and in the Ratnapura District.  
“Showers will also continue over the Southern parts of the country due to the indirect influence of the extremely severe cyclonic storm “Mocha” in the Bay of Bengal,” it added.
