Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Rajitha Senaratne yesterday said he would support Sri Lanka’s economic revival programme.
“I am only interested in bringing about economic stability of the nation. It is not a question of supporting incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe. I am doing this for the sake of the people in this country who are already suffering,” Dr. Senaratne told Daily Mirror.
“Some people in our own party are talking of amending the agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Sri Lanka will end up being another Ethiopia if the IMF withdraws,” he added.
Dr. Senaratne said all MPs should forget party politics and join in the struggle to stabilise Sri Lanka’s economy.
The MP mentioned that he had spoken to President Wickremesinghe recently. “I inquired from the President whether there is any move to extend his term by another year. He said there was no such move. I therefore told him not to allow any of his political associates to speak about extending the presidency and Parliament in public,” he said.
Asked whether he is hoping to meet the President again, Dr. Senaratne said he can meet the President any time. “I will only talk about reviving the country’s economy if I meet him. There are others in SJB who meet the President to get favours done,” he said.
Earlier, Dr. Senaratne said he would strive to form an alliance with the aim of reviving the country’s economy.
