A large group of people who gathered opposite the Welikada prison in anticipation of the release of former MP Ranjan Ramanayake had to go back in disappointment yesterday. 

Among the crowds were artistes and members of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya.   

“We came here with expectations but our hopes were shattered at the last moment. However we expect that Mr. Ramanayake will be released on another day one SJB activists said.   

The crowds gathered despite the Department of Prisons confirming Ramanayake was not included in the list of prisoners who were to be released to mark  Independence Day.
