The Attorney General’s Department has informed that the final report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) on political victimization headed by former Justice Upali Abeyratne was no longer valid as it and the Special Presidential Commission are defunct now, leader of the House Susil Premajayantha said yesterday.
He told Parliament that the AG’s Department had informed this to Secretary to the President Saman Ekanayake who had sought AG’s opinion on the possibility of revoking the report of the PCoI on political victimization.
He said this in response to a question by National People’s Power MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake on the stance of the present government on the said report.
MP Dissanayake said about ten people including himself and President Ranil Wickremesinghe had filed petitions in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal against implementing the recommendations of the PCoI report.
The MP requested the government to inform the court through the Attorney General that the PCoI report will not be implemented so that they could withdraw the petitions.
In response to a question on the amount of funds spent on the said commission, Minister Premajayantha assured to present the House a report in that regard shortly.
SJB MP Rajitha Senaratne said funds spent for the commission should be recovered from the person who appointed the commission and from its members.
