The opposition members of the Moratuwa Municipal Council yesterday tabled a resolution urging Mayor Samanlal Fernando to resign from his position.

Moratuwa Municipal Council member Lihini Fernando said the resolution was tabled against the mayor as he caused disrepute to the citizens of Moratuwa.

Seven opposition members of the council have signed a petition and tabled at the council meeting held yesterday.
The opposition members claimed that Samanlal Fernando is no longer suitable to hold the position as the first citizen of Moratuwa.

The councilors stated that the mayor was identified as a main suspect who gathered around 400 employees of the council on May 9 and attacked protesters at the MainaGoGama and GotaGoGama which led to violent incidents across the country.

They also claimed the mayor is currently in remand custody over the attack of protesters at Galle Face Green and also has been named as a suspect in a number of cases by court.
