Risky activities caused most flood-related deaths: DMC

By Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said most deaths caused by adverse weather conditions occurred due to risky activities like bathing, attempting to cross submerged roads and unsafe boating practices.

DMC Director Pradeep Kodippili emphasized that these activities were the primary causes of flood-related fatalities.

In total, 24 individuals lost their lives due to incidents like tree falls, soil collapse, drowning, and being swept away by floodwaters, he said.

Additionally, 239,006 people from 63,413 families were affected, with 16 sustaining injuries.
There was only one reported missing person due to the floods.

Mr. Kodippili urged people to refrain from visiting flood-affected areas or engaging with floodwaters.
