Special Advisor on Climate Change to President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Ruwan Wijewardene is in Kenya to attend the Africa Climate starting today. It will end on September 6 in Nairobi.
He is representing the President.
President Wickremesinghe was invited by his Kenyan counterpart William Ruto.
The Africa Climate Summit, set to take place in Kenya, serves as a crucial platform for discussions and collaborations aimed at addressing climate change challenges on the African continent and globally. As the Special Advisor on Climate Change, Ruwan Wijewardene brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise in climate-related matters and will actively participate in the summit’s sessions and activities. His presence underscores Sri Lanka’s dedication to addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development.
Sri Lanka’s valuable contribution to the discussions and strengthen the bonds of cooperation between Sri Lanka and Kenya in the context of climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts. Twenty heads of state across the globe are expected to attend the summit. The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the Managing Director of the World Bank Axel van Trotsenburg and the President of the European Union Ursula von der Leyen are among the high-profile dignitaries are also expected to attend today’s summit. This summit, coming after the Paris summit where greater clarity emerged, will be a critical opportunity to accelerate the global energy transition and deliver solutions to COP28 in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates.
High Commissioner Kananathan said, our President’s close relationship with Kenyan President Ruto has played a pivotal role in fostering cooperation and collaboration between the two nations and look forward to meaningful engagements during the Africa Climate Summit. Kananathan further said that President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s vision has shown a strong commitment to promoting green energy and sustainable environmental practices and under his leadership, Sri Lanka has embarked on several initiatives and policies aimed at advancing green energy production, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and fostering a sustainable future.
