SC dismisses FR petition against domestic debt restructuring

By Lakmal Sooriyagoda

A fundamental rights petition filed challenging the government’s domestic debt restructuring process was yesterday dismissed by the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court three-judge-bench comprising Justices S.Thurairaja, Kumuduni Wickramasinghe and Mahinda Samayawardena refused to grant leave to proceed with the petition taking into account the objections raised by the Attorney General.

The petition had been filed by President of the Inter Company Employees Union and JVP former Parliamentarian Wasantha Samarasinghe and five others. The petitioners had sought an interim order restraining the authorities from proceeding with the domestic debt restructuring affecting the investment, capital, interest component held in Treasury Bonds and bills by the EPF and ETF.
