The main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has decided to adopt a wait and see policy and then decide on its stance on the domestic debt restructuring programme, some MPs said yesterday.
SJB MP Eran Wickramaratne said the party cannot take a decision on the matter till the government comes out with its plan with regard to debt restructuring.
“What we are concerned about is the fate of the depositors and what would become of the EPF. We cannot make a decision as we are kept in the dark,” he told Daily Mirror.
MP Gayantha Karunatilleka said the party’s parliamentary group decided to wait and see what the cabinet decides with regard to the domestic debt restructuring and to make the final decision during the weekend after looking at the government proposal.
Meanwhile, Chief Opposition whip Lakshman Kiriella said there is no necessity for Parliament approval for the domestic debt destructing process. “There is no necessity for the domestic debt restructuring process but the government should let the opposition know its plan since the government is to seek the House approval,” he said.
