Sri Lanka is welcoming a much-needed respite from scorching temperatures as brisk winds and scattered showers become more prevalent, the Department of Meteorology announced yesterday. A spokesperson for the Department of Meteorology informed the Daily Mirror that an increase in winds sweeping across the island is accompanied by a growing occurrence of scattered showers.
These favourable conditions are expected to end the spell of intense heat in the coming days.
“We will be able to lift hot weather warnings starting today,” the spokesperson confirmed.
Previously, heat index warnings were issued for specific areas in the North Central, Uva, and Eastern provinces, as well as in the Vavuniya and Mullathivu Districts. The heat index, calculated based on factors such as relative humidity and maximum temperature, represents the perceived temperature experienced by individuals. It does not predict the maximum temperature but serves as an indicator of heat discomfort.
