The SLFP will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the party with an island wide blood donation campaign on this Thursday (2) adhering to Covid 19 prevention guidelines and safety protocol, General Secretary of the party and state minister Dayasiri Jayasekara said.
Minister Jayasekara told the media at the party office that the blood donation campaign expects to donate 10,000 pints of blood to the National Blood Transfusion Unit (NBTU).We plan to mobilise grassroot level SLFP organisations all over the country to donate 10,000 pints of blood with the assistance of the NBTU. There will be no party convention but only religious ceremonies on account of the pandemic. Constituent and district level SLFP organisers have been instructed by the party to ensure the blood donation campaign is a success, he added. Our objective is to donate 10,000 pints of blood but based on the response from the public around the country, I am confident that we will be in a position to exceed 15,000 pints, he added.
Minister Jayasekara noted that the NBTU was in short supply of blood due to the prevailing situation in the country and has made a public appeal to donate blood. He admitted that the country was in an extremely precarious situation in all sectors and as such it was the responsibility of all Sri Lankans to give their bit to come out of this tragic predicament. We must talk in one voice to bring this dreaded pandemic under control. We should always heed the experts opinions and plan our strategies accordingly. That is why we are holding the 70th anniversary of the party on a low key, he said.
The main function of the 70th anniversary of the SLFP will be held on a low key at the official residence of the former President Maithripala Sirisena. He is scheduled to make an important statement outlining the future strategies of the party. Two keynote addresses are also to be delivered by Prof. Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa and Prof. Dhamma Dissanayaka.
